I was in the middle of working on an entirely different comic strip when this idea for a one-panel, The New Yorker-esque cartoon caption idea popped into my head that I couldn’t shake.
So I listened to my gut and switched gears. The drawing and writing came so naturally. I’m happy with the way it turned out. It really speaks to the times that we’re living in where, as Asian folk, we have to be careful not just about covid but of also being victims of verbal or physical assaults because of all the ignorant, racist F*s out there.
I’m not gonna lie. When I was in Chinatown the other day with my mom picking up baked buns and produce, I was on high alert. And even though my folks are now fully vaccinated, I am not comfortable with them taking the T and going about their lives freely. We’re gonna wait the hate crimes out.
